Provence, where every moment becomes a memory

Abbey of Sénanque, lavender paradise !!!

The Abbey of Sénanque is a beautifully preserved medieval monastery located in Provence, in the south of France, near the village of Gordes. Founded in 1148, it belongs to the Cistercian Order, a Catholic monastic order known for its emphasis on simplicity, prayer, and manual labor.

The abbey complex is organized around several key elements:

  • The abbey church, austere yet imposing, filled with soft, filtered light entering through narrow, high windows. Its balanced proportions create a deeply contemplative atmosphere.

  • The cloister, the spiritual and communal heart of monastic life, with simple, elegant arcades where monks once walked in meditation.

  • The chapter house, where daily meetings were held, notable for its vaulted ceiling and acoustics.

  • The dormitory, large and unadorned, reflecting communal living and monastic humility.

Sénanque is especially famous for the lavender fields that surround it, particularly in summer. The vivid purple rows set against the pale stone of the abbey create an iconic Provençal landscape and enhance the sense of timeless peace.

Still inhabited today by a community of Cistercian monks, the Abbey of Sénanque is not merely a historical monument but a living place of silence, simplicity, and spiritual continuity, where time seems to stand still.
